Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kirtan?

Kirtan is a call and response musical meditation that takes a minute to learn, and makes you feel good just as fast. The practice goes back thousands of years and can be practiced by anyone. You do not need to be a good singer, a musician or a practitioner of yoga to experience the power of kirtan. An open mind and your voice are all that is required! Kirtan offers a rich, immersive experience that has the power to change the world, one heart at a time.

Do I need to know the mantras? What do they mean?

Not at all! We display all of the mantras being chanted so that you can follow along easily. We also give brief explanations as to their meanings before singing.

Iā€™m not sure if I want to chant. Can I come anyway?

Sure you can! Guests are encouraged to participate in whatever way they feel comfortable. Some chant along with us, others prefer to listen. Our goal is to help you have a meditative experience.

I see some events are by donation. How much should I donate?

We do not have a minimum donation amount, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds.  Guests can choose to donate however much they feel inspired to give. As Kirtan Vancouver is a not for profit organization, all funds raised go directly back into hosting more fantastic events!

Can I bring my own instruments?

We typically rehearse our Kirtan melodies beforehand to ensure that everyone is comfortable with the melodies before the event begins. For that reason, we prefer that guests participate with their voices. If you have an instrument and feel it would work nicely with our Kirtan, please speak to one of the organizers.

I see some of the events serve food. What type of food is served?

Kirtan Vancouver lovingly prepares only plant-based food to share with our guests.

Can children attend Kirtan Vancouver events?

Kirtan is a form of meditation and we want to ensure that all of our guests are able to have a meditative experience. If you feel your child would do well in that environment, you're welcome to bring them along.

Please note: Any child attending the kirtan event must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian at all times.

I am organizing an event and would like to include kirtan. Would Kirtan Vancouver want to come to my event?

We love to bring Kirtan to all kinds of events! Please send us an email to hello@kirtanvancouver.com
